27 guns seized in seven days
The Jamaica Constabulary Force, (JCF), says it has seized 27 illegal firearms during the first week of June, raising the total amount of weapons recovered since the start of the year to 320.
It represents a two percent increase when compared to the 314 firearms recovered during the same period in 2021.
The JCF also says it has arrested and charged 401 persons with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
A total of 6, 380 rounds of ammunition have also been seized since the start of the year, representing a 4.2 percent increase over the corresponding period.
Meanwhile, police commissioner Major General Anthony Anderson confirmed that murders are up by 6.3 percent this year.
However, Anderson also said that 76 percent of those murders were a result of gang conflicts.
He added that the police will be strengthening its approach with an aim to significantly reduce the homicide rate by the end of June.
