Jamaican woman detained, husband granted bail for child abuse

A Trinidadian man accused of abusing an infant girl because she did not want to be force fed was granted bail following his court appearance in the country.

The event, which was captured on tape and posted on social media, also inadvertently implicated his 21-year-old Jamaican wife, who is now detained in the country.

In the video, the toddler, clad in only a diaper, is seen being slapped repeatedly by Gobin who held a bottle of milk that the child was reluctant to drink.

Charged with abusing a child is Dexter Gobin and his wife Yanique Taylor-Gobin. He was granted conditional bail in the sum of TT$150,000 (approximately J$2.8 million). Taylor-Gobin, however, was detained.

According to the Trinidad Guardian, Gobin's wife, who is originally from Brown's Town, St Ann, was denied bail because she reportedly overstayed her time in the country. A detention order was taken out against her as a result.

Both Gobin and Taylor-Gobin are accused of allegedly beating the child at their home in Maracas, Trinidad, earlier this month.

As part of his bail conditions, Gobin was ordered to report to the St Joseph Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and should not go within 100 metres from the child.

Both Gobin and his wife are scheduled to reappear in court on November 16.
