Fined for ganja

December 02, 2015

A man was fined yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's (RM) court for ganja-related offences.

Charged with possession of, dealing in, taking steps preparatory to export, and conspiracy to export ganja is Roy Cummings.

He wasted no time in pleading guilty to possession and dealing but took some time before pleading guilty to taking steps to export, arguing that he was not leaving the island.

He said, "Your Honour, I was on my way to Nyabinghi camp, and I just stopped at the airport."

The court dismissed the conspiracy count on the basis that no evidence could be offered.

The court heard that authorities searched Cummings and found two pounds, four ounces of the illicit drug.

Simone Wolfe-Reece fined Cummings $2,600 or 10 days for possession and $7,200 or 10 days for dealing.

He was also sentenced to three months' imprisonment suspended for 12 months for taking steps preparatory to export.
