SCQ : Calabar learns from mistakes

After losing 10 points in the final section in their first match of TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz earlier this year, Calabar High School went back to Red Hills Road to correct their mistakes. Their coach said this was why his boys were able to rally and beat Glenmuir High School in an exciting round-three encounter to advance to the quarter-finals.

The match ended at 39 to 36 in favour of Calabar.

Calabar was ahead of Glenmuir by five points heading into the buzzer challenge, but the Clarendon-based institution correctly answered three consecutive questions to take the lead. By then, the studio audience was buzzing with excitement, but the boys from Red Hills Road had learnt how to hold their composure. They answered the last two questions of the match to secure the victory.

"In the first match, the buzzer challenge left much to be desired. We saw where we were deficient, so then we started coaching them on getting it right, and they were receptive," coach Kemoy Lindsay told THE STAR.

Lindsay said that he, along with other members of the coaching staff, put the boys in scenarios where they were trailing opponents and needed to perform well with the buzzer in order to win.

"In the second match we were a bit cautious, but in the third match we were more confident," Lindsay said.

"If it comes down to the buzzer in the next and they play like we coached them, I like our chances."

Glenmuir's coach, Owen Rodney, was pleased with how his team played despite the loss. "I think they did very well and I am very proud of them. It was very exciting, very close, but we just didn't get the result that we wanted today," Rodney said.

Calabar will play Ardenne High School in the quarter-finals. Both schools have won the title five times.
