JSIF, NWC to provide water for Barrett Town

The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), in collaboration with the National Water Commission (NWC), has embarked on an initiative to replace existing pipe structure and put in pipes with a larger diameter in the community of Barrett Town, St James.

The project, which started in July, is scheduled to be completed by June 2018 as part of the community integrated development project, where Barrett Town was selected as one of 18 communities across seven parishes identified for development.

"A lot of people don't have access to water, and they don't have regularised connections, and so this project is going to enable them to have established accounts with the NWC," Omar Sweeney, managing director of the JSIF, told WESTERN STAR.

"That is why we are in partnership with the NWC. They provided the design work, and we are doing the installation, and then the NWC will come back and connect the new customers," he added.

Sweeney said that he hopes that there will be greater policing, public safety, and better infrastructure for the residents of the area, which was selected for upgrade works because of the volatility and vulnerability.
