Mt Alvernia High School has been given $500,000 to go towards much-needed repairs at the 93-year-old institution.

The funds were donated by the organisers of the five-year-old MoBay City Run following this year's 10k and 5k run and walk on May 6.

"We made between $5 million and $6 million this year, and we're giving away about $4.5 million of that, and we're giving $500,000 to Mt Alvernia High School because Mt Alvernia needs help," said Janet Silvera, chairman of the MoBay City Run organising committee.

"A lot of the buildings there are old, and they need help in fixing the school. That money is going towards rebuilding the school, and I invite you, if you can, to support the school," added Silvera, who is a past student of the school.

In addition to Mt Alvernia, Sam Sharpe Teachers' College, the University of Technology's western campus, the University of the West Indies Western Jamaica Campus, and the Montego Bay Community College received $4.5 million in scholarships from the MoBay City Run.

Since its inception in 2013, the MoBay City Run has hosted its fundraising run and walk in Montego Bay to support struggling university students. This year, high schools have been added to the beneficiaries' list.
