October 10 is a day that Nicole Stewart does not like to remember. However, it is a day she will never forget as that was when she got a call that her 14-year-old son was in the hospital nursing a wound to the face.

The mother of three told THE STAR that while in Portmore, St Catherine, attending to her family's needs, she got a call from her son's principal informing her that her son had been injured.

She panicked.

Immediately, she rushed to Kingston to see her son.

"Mi pressure instantly go up when me see him because him face chop out bad," she said.

BOX CUTTER

"Him tell me seh is extortion thing happen because the bwoy weh cut him ask him for $50 and him seh: 'Weh him fi get it from?' Him seh him a come from bathroom and see the bwoy wid sup'm, but him never know a wah. Him a walk go a him class and the bwoy approach him again and ask fi di money and him seh him nuh have none, and him cut him inna him face," she said.

Stewart said that she is not sure what was used to cause the damage but the object seems to be a box cutter because of the extent of the damage.

She said the doctors at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) told her that her son has a 50 per cent chance of living based on the damage to his face.

"The doctor seh to me that the cut is so deep that if you touch it , a him skull. Him haffi get checked on every two week because since the incident, a the plastic surgeon dem haffi a attend to him because the doctor say that him cells and veins get cut," she said.

Stewart, who now has a $70,000 bill at KPH, said that she is stressed and not sure what to do because the bills are piling up. She said that the school has made no attempts to help out and she is yet to get any assistance from the mother whose child injured her son.

"The principal call and seh that I should get the doctor to say what and what is needed, but that is not going to help me. Every time I go to the hospital and they look at him, me get another prescription fi fill. Mi spend so much money, me not even can count and him have nuff sessions leave," she said.

SON WAS ARRESTED

Stewart believes that she may not get the justice she deserves, especially after her son was arrested and charged last Friday for wounding with intent. She also had to pay $50,000 for his bail.

"Last week, after dem talk to the lady, dem seh dem haffi charge me son based on the information the [child's] mother gave them. So me seh how yuh fi charge my son based on weh she seh and none a wi never did deh deh? Why not get statements from witnesses and people at the school?," she said, noting that she does not know if the other boy has been charged.

Stewart's son and the other child are to appear in court on November 14 in relation to the case, and she said that she is hoping her son pulls through.

"Mi carry mi son and raise him for 14 years and nothing never do him and now him haffi a fight for his life over $50? That nuh fair," she said.
