Community Focus: Granville wants community centre repaired

'Shame' and 'disgrace' are just few of the words that the people of Granville in Trelawny used to describe a dilapidated structure that was once the Granville Community Centre.

"The community centre is a common embarrassment in Granville because if you go down there right now it's not serving one thing," Lorin Johnson told the WESTERN STAR.

"We don't have a community centre anymore. We have a building that was abandoned about 20 years ago because it never built properly and it was built on the wrong part of the common," he added.

The 50-year-old man recalled the days when the centre was opened to the community, noting that it was often used to host community meetings and social events.

"A lot of things use to gwaan when the centre was just implemented, when I was about 17 or 18. Now it want repair," Johnson said.

Roland Garden has urged residents to mobilise their resources in order to repair the community centre.

"We can't leave everything on Government or somebody to do something for us. We need to start it and when we start it, if we need assistance we can seek outside aid," Garden said.

The people are confident that with a new community centre, they will be able to implement a number of activities which could benefit the residents.

"We wouldn't then have to go to Falmouth and Bounty Hall. We can learn everything right here and build up the community," said Adrian Bernard.
