Orange Bay to Negril to get more streetlights

The four-mile roadway from Orange Bay to Negril, in Hanover, will be getting 10 new street lights, thanks to the timely intervention of the Minister of Local Government. The Hanover Municipal Corporation (HMC), which approved a resolution in their October monthly meeting to write to the Local Government Ministry about the situation, recently received a letter from Rupert Pryce, the acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, advising that approval has been granted for the installation the streetlights.

"Words cannot express the way I feel about the approval of these lights," said Marvell Sewell, the councillor for the Green Island Division, who has been pushing to have the lights installed. "Ten is really not enough, but it is a start."

When he initially raised the matter at the HMC's October monthly meeting, Sewell, in whose division the roadway in question is located, said residents, motorists and pedestrians, who traverse the much-used corridor at nights, were facing serious challenges due to the darkness along the roadway.

Sewell said that he hopes the placement of the lights will be done strategically so as to cover the areas of greatest needs. He said he hopes consideration would be given to further allocation of more street lights in the near future.
