Amid Jennifer 'Jenny Jenny' Small's decision not to apologise for calling Ladasha 'Mackerel' Francis a prostitute, psychologist Dr Leahcim Semaj said there is nothing to apologise for.

"She (Francis) has put herself out and made her intentions clear on what she wanted to do ... all a prostitute is, is someone who profits from providing sexual favours for other people. It is a legitimate word," he said.

He told THE STAR that the radio personality was within her right to speak the truth and not be politically correct because people do not want to face the truth.

"She is not playing social worker in a radio interview ... but maybe a dose of reality is useful. I see nothing wrong with it because ... it provides entertainment and information," he said.

However, female recording artiste Pamputtae disagreed with Small. She said that she does not believe Francis does the things she is saying, but only says them to get attention, which in turn helps put food on her table.

Serious problem

She said that from her interaction with Francis, she does not believe that shaming her should have been the first solution on national radio by a radio personality who many idolise.

"Dah prostitute talk deh, mi nuh like it and Mackerel is not no prostitute. She just a do har thing and sometime you seh some things and yuh nuh know weh it a go tek. A something she just seh and the Internet run with it because people like carelessness. Spice sing about it and nuff female artiste sing about it; even man sing about it as well. It nuh so serious fi seh she a prostitute," she said.

Meanwhile, gender advocate Glenda Simms said she does not see a problem with the statement made by Small. She said that prostitution is a serious problem that many countries face, and many women have indulged in some form of prostitution.

She said that prostitution does not only involve the exchange of sex for money but the exchange of any favours for money.

"This is an issue that has been around for as long as anyone can remember the history. I am sure Jenny Jenny would have known what prostitution is all about. I don't think I would blame her for saying the woman is a prostitute if she is prostituting herself," she said.

Simms said that we as a people need to stop hiding behind a facade and come to the realisation that the issue is real.

She said that women are not the only ones prostituting themselves because men are doing it as well.
