A few years after leaving the Maxfield Park Children’s Home, where she spent most of her teenage years, Sashawna Tomlinson returned to the facility last Saturday to give back.

She said that when she went to the home, she was surprised to see the condition of the auditorium, and she was moved to help.

Through the Keep Eating, Leader Provide (KELP) programme, she said that she hopes to get the auditorium fixed. The programme, which aims to provide mental security for underprivileged persons in the home, was undertaken by Tomlinson and her colleagues. She told THE STAR that even though the children had fun at the treat she hosted last weekend, she believes the focus should turn to the auditorium, which has no windows, a leaking roof and half of a door.

“We had popcorn machine and snow cone. We had a few one and one with the children there. It was great to go back there and give. It was thought of by my cousin, and so I have to give her credit. Then I took it over and said this is a great opportunity, and I jumped at it. She knew that I lived there, and we were able to do things,” she said.

“We want them (children) to know that even though they are in poverty, there are people out there who will always give a helping hand. Last Saturday when we got there, the rain fell and we had to be mopping up because the roof is leaking, chi-chi is eating out the windows. I really want to continue to give back because they (facility) are the ones who sent me through high school, and I got a few subjects and I am now able to work,” she said.

Tomlinson, who is now working and attending university, said that she is grateful for the home that helped to mould her for the five years that she was there. She said that she has been able to accomplish a number of things because someone believed in her and wanted her to achieve, and that is what she wants to do for other children at the home.

“The auditorium looks terrible, and this is where they would have their gatherings. We would really appreciate anything that people want to contribute, whether it be widows, doors and/or money,” she said.
