Jamaican men won’t sit to pee - Urologists reject study on how to eliminate prostate problems

"Nobody nah go see mi a bend dung and a pee pee. Yuh mad," a taxi man said during a discussion about a study that said men with prostate problems can get relief when they sit down or stoop down to urinate.

The article, which was published on menshealth.com, indicated that sitting down to urinate is healthier than standing up.

In the article written by Ken Adams, he cited a research done by the Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands, which stated that sitting down to urinate allows for "a more favourable urodynamic profile." This means that the flow from the bladder is stronger, thereby eliminating strain and prostate problems.

Despite this research, Jamaican men have taken a firm stance against the suggested practice of stooping or sitting down to urinate.

"Yuh must mad, enuh. At no point in time you a go catch me a siddung fi pee pee. After me a nuh woman," one man exclaimed.

Prevent prostate problems

While some women are not opposed to the idea, they indicated that it would be weird to see their male partners stooping down to do the act.

"If him lock up inna the bathroom, fine. But me and him nah go road and him a bend dung and do that," Chrissan said.

"Can you image me deh a dance and go bend dung like gyal side a di wall a pee pee. Nuh man nah see me a do dat," said Harvey, who was participating in the conversation.

As some men reject the study, urologist Elon Thompson said that he has not seen any scientific research indicating that men will fix or prevent prostate problems if they sit down to urinate.

"I am not sure of how they did that study, but I have not seen any strong scientific study to indicate that sitting down helps," he said.

Another urologist, Dr Gareth Reid, agrees.

"I looked through the article. It is an interesting read. But based on it, I really do not have any recommendation to give for sitting. I don't think it really matters. If you have urinary issues related to the prostate, then treat the problem. Sitting won't overcome that issue," he said.
