Good Samaritan’s car stolen after offering help

June 17, 2019

The dreams of 19-year-old Jane Brown* to help her friends commute to school for the new school year have vanished, as her car was stolen last Friday while she was at a party.

In a Twitter post on June 12, Brown said: "Any UWI student living in or close to Constant Spring Road or Barbican area, if you want, I can take you to school in the mornings in September. That's one of the things I said I would do when I get my car."

Brown said that she decided to offered to carry her schoolmates because they are often targeted by criminals.

"I always want to help people. It is something I got from my mom because she was such a giving person. Most of my friends I know took taxi and bus and stuff, so I just wanted to help out," she said.

Heartbroken

Sadly, she was the target this time around. She said that when she was about to leave a party last Friday night on Edgecombe Avenue in St Andrew, she realised that her vehicle was missing.

The vehicle, a 2002 Grand Vitara, was a gift she got from her sister in February.

She said that the matter was reported to the police, but she has little faith that the vehicle will be found. The vehicle is insured.

She said that she is heartbroken by what happened, and she wonders if she was targeted because of the tweet she made.

And even as she searches for the vehicle, she said that the unfortunate incident will not stop her from doing good.

"I'm not going to stop being nice, but that night really taught me a lot about people, and it put things in perspective," she said. "However, it's hard not to hate the world at this point because it doesn't seem like a coincidence to me that after I post my car, it went missing."
