Residents of Westgate Hills in Montego Bay, St James, turned out for a candlelight vigil held in the memory of 12-year-old Vince Marsh, the first form Kingston College student who died on the weekend, when a section of the large gate at the entrance of his home fell on top of him.

Kereen Dawkins, president of the Westgate Hills Development Committee, told The WESTERN STAR that she and other members of her group have been giving full support to the family in their time of grief.

"This is a very sad moment for all of us in the community, especially with the Marsh's family, who lost their precious son," Dawkins said. "All of us are grieving with the family at this time, and we are all prepared to give our full support in every, and any way to the family."

Intelligent, brilliant child

She said that Vince was a very intelligent and brilliant child.

"He had just finished his first year at Kingston College and his family was now in the process of moving him closer to them in Montego Bay, so they were in the process of moving him to the Herbert Morrison Technical High School," she said. "He was a child who inspired the persons around him, and painted a vibrant picture for the love of science at the DMP Academy. He had also joined the Kingston College science club and was creating wonders as a future scientist among his elders at KC."

Reports are that about 2 p.m., last Friday, Marsh's father Vernon, was in the process of driving from the home to purchase food items in downtown Montego Bay, when the child offered to open the gate for him.

The elder Marsh was in the process of driving from the garage when he heard a loud rumbling, and rushed to investigate.

To his surprise he saw his son lying on the concrete pavement, with a section of the heavy metal gate and concrete debris on top of his head.

Vince was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

The police were called, and upon reaching the home, they discovered that the concrete column that held the gate had crumbled.
