When Dennis Wellington was 12 years old, all he cared about was playing and being on the road. Nothing could have prepared him for the 'headless man' he saw one fateful day in Miracle Mountain, St Catherine.

While on a jolly stroll from a mango bush, he saw a figure in blue shorts and a blue shirt. From afar, he was not able to 'put a face' to the 'person', but as it got closer, he realised that there was no head on the figure. At that time, Wellington did not think twice. He 'tek up foot in hand' and sprinted for home.

"Mi go a mango bush because wi used to go round a mi grandmother go pick mango when mi a go town, and mi see the man a walk come without head. What mi did hear then is that the man's head was chopped off in his home in the community," he said.

THE TRANSFORMATION

He thought that he has been running at the speed of light, but when he made his way to the road close to home, he saw the headless man again. This time, the duppy had transformed into dogs.

"When mi see him the first time, mi run lef the mango basket. When mi reach up the road, mi see the man again, and as me see him, him turn out inna bout ten dog. When mi reach a mi grandmother, mi tell mi family member to pull the door and him nuh wah pull the door. Mi just lick it off and run go inna the house. When mi reach, mi head swell big so, and dem a ask mi a wah, and mi seh, 'See wah duppy man out deh so'. And dem a tell mi seh dem nuh see no duppy, and mi a seh, 'yes, see him tun inna ten dog," Wellington said.

Wellington, now 37, said that he has never seen a ghost since that day, even though he has been a gravedigger for the past 20 years.

"A the first mi did see one, and true mi go talk, mi can't see dem again. Dem seh mi shouldn't talk because dem nah go show demself again, and mi never see none fi true. Mi sorry seh mi talk because mi want see mi grandmother, uncle, and dead family because mi waah see how dem look. But now dem a hide from me, and mi caah see them," he said.
