Fears of the Logwood Cemetery in Black River running out of space soon have been laid to rest as the St Elizabeth Municipal Corporation has acquired more lands for people to bury their dead.

Mayor of Black River Derrick Sangster said that the current cemetery, which has existed for almost 70 years, is nearing its capacity.

"The cemetery in Black River has been there for an extremely long time so spaces are running low, but we still have a little bit of space left," he said.

According to the mayor, the lands on which the cemetery will be located was given to the St Elizabeth Municipal Corporation by the National Land Agency.

"We are preparing the new one now. We are clearing it and trying to get things in order where both cemeteries can be in operation. I am not able to say when it will be opened but we hope it will be soon," he said.

"The cemetery was there as part of the Luana diary settlement, so there are two graves on it already," he added.

While not able to say how many graves the plot of land in Luana will be able to accommodate, Sangster said that people in and around the area do not have to worry about finding burial space for some time.

"We are taking steps to make more space available, so people don't need to worry at this time. We are not destitute of space, as we speak," he said.
