A family is left in a desperate search, after their patriarch, 82-year-old Raphael Robinson, left his home in West Cumberland, Portmore, St Catherine, last Saturday evening and has not returned home.

His son, Garfield Robinson, who lives with him, told THE STAR that his father has Alzheimer's disease, but he has never been away from home this long.

"He has never done anything like this before. Sometimes he will leave and then he will come back. He was last seen yesterday (Saturday) evening. He had dinner yesterday and said that he was going for a walk. From that, we haven't seen him. He has a sickness, Alzheimer's. It's mild, but sometimes it chip in and chip out," he said.

Alzheimer's causes a prolonged decline in thinking, behavioural and social skills that badly affects a person's ability to function independently.

The disease is widely referred to as the 'memory-robbing' disease. It is the most common cause of dementia.

None of Raphael's children know what he was wearing when he left the house.

"I was not there when he was leaving ... but someone was home with him. He just said he was going for a walk and then left. Usually, he would just go right outside and come back in the house," Garfield explained. "This time, he didn't. I don't know what colour clothes he was in. I just know that he was in black shoes. He's not 100 per cent healthy. He might say he is going for a walk or he is going to the clinic ... he will just repeat the same things over and over."

Since the his disappearance, family members have been going around and checking popular locations in Portmore, but they have seen no signs of their father.

"It is three of us. Two of us have been searching ... one is overseas. We just want to find him. We would be grateful and appreciative if anyone has seen him and can let us know. We checked the basic places like the police station and the hospital so far. We have checked those places in Portmore, and we have also checked downtown if he just decided to go downtown and stuff like that," Garfield said.

If anyone has seen 82-year-old Raphael Robinson, they can contact Garfield at 876-564-5217, or call the nearest police station.
