At a time when many children are thinking of becoming attorneys, doctors and engineers, 10-year-old Jordan Murray is bent on becoming a cattle farmer.

When THE STAR caught up with Jordan in Hayfield district, St Catherine, he was observed busily tending to a ram under a tree at his home, feeding it carrots, bell peppers and other food.

"I just love farming, especially raising cows. I study about the Brahman, the Black Angus and other types. I am just interested in farming as it makes me feel good. So I want to make a career out of it," Jordan said.

Brahmans and the Black Angus are two popular beef breeds.

Jordan's mother, Rashida Ffrench, a teacher, said that he spends a lot of time learning about agriculture, in particular cattle farming.

"The boy is very special. He said that he wants to become a farmer. The thing is that he studies mostly about farming, and cows in particular. He can be seen watching YouTube about the habits of cows," Ffrench said.

Jordan, a grade-four student at Jericho Primary School, feeds off the passion of his grandfather, Oswald Ffrench, who is also a farmer. The young boy often follows him to the fields to tend to the animals.

"This bwoy is mi general, as him just determine to follow mi footsteps in the farming ... . I have even fenced up the place where he will raise his cow," said the elder Ffrench, who was once a dairy farmer.

Though his family say that praedial thieves are making life challenging in the community, Jordan said that the uncultured practice will not affect his career choice.
