Murray Gut Corner in Trelawny is part of the long, hilly terrain route through the parish that has recently emerged as a small farming community with one of the parish's weirdest names.

There are many stories about how the small community that is located between Albert Town and Stetin got its name.

A restaurant operator in Albert Town said she heard stories of the corner being compared to a 'big belly' farmer who reportedly owned large tracts of lands in the area.

"There was a man by the name Mr Murray that had a very big hang-off belly, and it was his property, so that's how it got the name. People used to say the corner big and deep like Mr Murray gut," Chambers said.

Fredley Walcott, a yam farmer in the community, said he does know how the area got its name, but said the story about the 'big belly' man could be true.

"Maybe if me did ask my old folks they would tell me that too. It's not weird to us who grow in the community. We got used to it, and just live with it," Walcott said.

"Once you come Christiana and a come Trelawny, you have to pass Murray Gut Corner. This is a little farming community and a just that we live off here, 'cause not even light nuh deh here," he added.

Another resident said he heard that the area was so named due to a motor vehicle accident.

"One truck pulp a man gut round there name Mr Murray, me hear. They say the truck run over him and bust him gut around there," the yam farmer said.

Murray Gut Corner has one of the most worrisome corners in all of the parish for motor vehicles. It was infamous for many accidents years ago. At one point, scared passengers would opt to come out of their vehicles and walk to a spot where they felt safe, and then get back into the vehicles.

Nicole Nugent, councillor for the Albert Town division in which Murray Gut Corner falls, said that while she is unaware of how the area got its name, she would not rule out making the small farming community's name official.

"That area would fall under Stetin," said Nugent."Yes, we could consider making it official because that's what people call it from I was born until now," she said in response to the question. "I don't know that place by no other name and I guarantee that for my foreparents, it's the same -- Murray Gut Corner."
