A female inspector of police reportedly had to seek medical attention last Friday after a woman, who is allegedly of unsound mind, hit her in the head with a stone.

The incident occurred along Burke Road in front of the Spanish Town Police Station. Reports are that about 3 p.m., the senior cop was walking when the woman attacked her from behind, striking her with the stone. This caused a head wound that bled profusely. The injured cop was rushed to the nearby Spanish Town Hospital where she was treated for her injuries. It is reported that the policewoman received five stitches and was placed on sick leave. The woman has been arrested and charged with unlawful wounding.

Last September, Constable Paul Gordon, who was attached to the St Catherine Scene of Crime Division, was killed in Linstead in the parish after he was hit on the head with a stone by a man of unsound mind. His attacker was later killed during a confrontation with the police.

Recently the police, along with mental health practitioners, held a conference in the parish on how to handle encounters with persons of unsound mind.
