Man believed to be mentally challenged crashes $35m Benz
The Kingston Central police have confirmed that a man who crashed a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle that he gained access to by entering the Stewart's Automotive Group compound in Kingston was in custody and facing charges.
The vehicle is said to be a GLE 53, which is valued at approximately J$35 million. It is alleged that around 9 p.m. Saturday, the man drove the luxury sport SUV, knocking down two gates at the establishment. Deputy Superintendent of Police Michelle Campbell, who is acting commanding officer for the division, said that the man "is suspected to be mentally challenged".
"He is charged and in custody at the Central lock-up," she said.
"He went to the back of the premises, gained access to a new 2024 red Mercedes Benz. The police was called, and with the quick response of the police, he was held on the compound," she added.
When contacted for comment, Jacqueline Stewart Lechler, Stewart's Automotive Group's managing director, said "We have a private matter under investigation and have no comment at this time."
