Buchanan set for Vybz Kartel murder appeal
Two weeks after being handed a two-year suspension for comments he made in reference to Jamaica's chief prosecutor, attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan is once more free to serve his clients.
Buchanan was on Tuesday granted a stay of his suspension by the Court of Appeal, pending the outcome of his appeal against the suspension period which has been described as excessive.
Case management conference is set for July next year, and after that, a date will be set for the hearing of the appeal.
Buchanan will now be able to continue practising, and will be able to go to the United Kingdom Privy Council to represent dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel who is appealing against his murder conviction.
The source of attorney's suspension stemmed from the lyrics of one of his client's songs, 'The Menace', in which Palmer directed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Paula Llewellyn, perform a sexual act.
While co-hosting a programme on YouTube in August, Buchanan quoted the lyrics direct at the DPP.
The comment set off a firestorm of criticisms, triggering Buchanan’s resignation from several positions he held at the time. A complaint to the disciplinary committee of the GLC by its Chairman, Denise Kitson, was also filed.
