Jealous man beats tourist

December 21, 2023

A Corporate Area man who used a piece of board to assault a tourist he met earlier this year, is expected to be sentenced when he returns to court next year.

Michael Myers is before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property. On November 29, the complainant and Myers met and spent days at a local guest house. However Myers, the court heard, became jealous when he saw the complainant interacting with another person.

He left the premises and returned with a piece of board, trying to open a window of the room that the complainant was occupying. Myers, the prosecutor contended, used the board to hit the complainant in the chest and, in the process, broke the complainant's necklace, which is valued at US$800 (approximately J$123,500).

Myers, who pleaded guilty on an earlier occasion, was offered $120,000 bail with surety and is to return to court on February 20, 2024, to be sentenced.
