TT police capture soldier wanted in the murders of mother and daughter

Police have captured a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF), who is the main suspect in the shooting deaths of a 66-year-old woman and her 43 -year old daughter at their home in Western Trinidad on Tuesday.

Police said that the Regiment Warrant Officer was detained along the Demerara Road and the Arima Blanchisseusse Road, east of here on Tuesday night.

Police said that the soldier shot Carmilita De Leon, 66 and her daughter, Calida Schumber, 43, at their home in Glencoe, west of here and that he had recently been served with a court order to stay away from the house last year.

“At around 8.15 pm on the second of January 2024, he was sighted by an active search party along the Blanchisseusse Road. He was arrested and detained without incident,” said the head of the Police Western Division, Superintendent Sean Henry said, adding that the suspect was taken to the Arima health facility for a medical checkup.

“He appeared to be free of any physical injury but was taken to the Arima health facility where he was medically examined and it was confirmed that he was without any physical injury. He was then handed over to the homicide bureau …and inquiries are continuing. The family of the deceased has been informed.”.
