After being forced to stay home for a week due to the destruction of their school building, students of Port Royal Basic School are set to return to the classroom this Monday.

Head teacher at the institution, Dalaine Marriot, said the school, which caters to two and three year olds, will have its classes on the verandah.

Students were forced to stay away from the facility after a fire gutted two of its classrooms on January 25. It is reported that about 9 p.m., fire was observed coming from a section of the board and concrete structure. A unit from the nearby Port Royal Fire Station responded and extinguished the blaze. It was later observed that two classrooms were gutted. Other sections, such as the offices, were affected by smoke.

Marriot said she does not know when the classrooms will be rebuilt, but hopes it will be done in time for the start of the new school year in September.

"There have been talks about rebuilding and I have requested a concrete building, because it was drywall that was there," she said.

Port Royal Basic School has a total of 19 students on roll.
