Murders down by 17%

According to the latest serious crime statistics published by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the country has recorded 192 murders as of March 9.

The figure represents 17 per cent decline or 39 less murders year on year as the JCF reported 231 murders in 2023. 

St James is still the most murderous police division of all 19 divisions with 28. However, this represents a 15 per cent decline when compared to the corresponding period last year.

St Andrew South recorded 19, St Catherine South 15, Westmoreland 14, Kingston Eastern 14 and St Andrew Central 14 round out the top six divisions with the most homicides.

Portland has the least with one murder recorded since the start of the year.

Shootings overall declined two per cent while the number of injured persons have increased by 13 reports year on year. 

Rape is down 41 per cent, robbery down two per cent and break-ins down 19 per cent.

The JCF is gearing to promote a member from within its ranks to become Jamaica’s new commissioner of police in April as the contract of the current commissioner Major General Antony Anderson expires the end of this month.
