At least 22 of the nation's police stations are now utilising the new digital Station Records Management System, which is creating the scope for citizens to make real-time reports, and is far less time-consuming than the 'big book' method.

The new system, which is part of the effort to modernise police services, is expected to significantly reduce the time taken to make applications for certain permits. It was designed and introduced to organise police data in electronic format, and to facilitate electronic recording of reports, complaints, and administrative entries by officers.

"This is one of the most important transformations that we have embarked on. It is assisting us in transitioning from a lot of our paper-based records to using an electronic system and connecting stations islandwide," said Sergeant Shermaine Hassack, who heads the Special Projects Department at the National Police College of Jamaica, at Twickenham Park, St Catherine. Hassack said the police stations now using the new technology have been outfitted with computers, and personnel have been trained to use the system, which is an ongoing activity as it related to more police stations coming on board.

Hassak said kiosks are being installed at stations for persons to utilise them for their application for certain services from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, without having to fill out forms.
