University student implicated in laptop theft

A second-year university student is at the centre of a probe that involves a missing laptop from his friend's home.

Jordain Butler pleaded not guilty to simple larceny in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday. It is alleged that on April 10, Butler went to the home of the complainant and sometime after 3 p.m., the complainant fell asleep. When she woke up two hours later, she noticed that Butler had left the premises and her laptop was missing. The complainant contacted Butler about the missing device, however, he informed her that he did not know anything about her laptop.

It was shared in the court by the complainant, that she has since been receiving threatening emails from an anonymous source about her laptop.

"I have tortured you enough and my sister doesn't need your laptop any more. I am willing to give it back to you but it won't be for free, so what are you willing to do for it? Reply in the next 30 minutes and if you don't, I will keep this piece of old junk and you will not hear from me again," the purported email said.

"These allegations are actually worse than the stolen laptop. It is awful, you need to take the emails more seriously than the theft. You need to report it to the police. It speaks volumes, it speaks that this person probably watched a lot of pornography," Senior Pariah Judge Sanchia Burrell argued.

The matter was then adjourned until June 12. Butler was made the subject of a fingerprint order and as a condition of his bail, is to report to the police once weekly and is not to interfere or communicate indirectly or directly with the complainant.
