Cashier allegedly defrauds supermarket

May 22, 2024

An investigation by the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime branch has commenced following an alleged case of fraud at one of the island's supermarkets.

Prosecutors contend that the fraud, which allegedly took place over three days during the week of March 15, was meticulously planned by the accused, Monifa Coleman and her conspirators. Allegations outlined in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday stated that Coleman was employed as a cashier and had another woman pick up items in the store, with specific instructions that she (Coleman) was to cash them out. Coleman, the court heard, cashed the items valued at $81,683 but pocketed the sums for her own use and benefit. She did not enter a plea to larceny as a servant and she had no legal representation.

The prosecutor informed Chief Parish Judge Chester Crooks that another charge is to be laid against Coleman, for additional sums lost by the supermarket.

The matter was adjourned until July 10 when the matter is set for mention.
