Women’s bail revoked for allegedly violating probation

July 16, 2024

Two Corporate Area women, one of whom left her child at a daycare to attend court on Monday, were remanded in custody until September.

Koya Dick and her cousin Celine Williams pleaded with Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell not to revoke their bail. But despite their cries, the judge stood firm in her decision.

"Play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. I have also assigned Legal Aid to you because I don't like the vulgarity you bring into the space," Burrell said. Dick and Williams were remanded based on utterances made by a police corporal familiar with the women. Dick has been before the court at least four times previously, while Williams has made more than three appearances. According to the police, both women, who are from the central Kingston area, were sentenced to 40 hours community service. However, it is believed that they have not been fulfilling their obligations and personnel from the Probation and Aftercare Services have been working to ascertain their whereabouts.

"Your Honour, Ms Williams has a matter before the court and a condition of that matter is that she is not supposed to be living in Kingston Central and she is to be reporting to the Old Harbour police every Wednesday. Your Honour, she has not been reporting and quite frankly, I am tired of both of them," the cop informed the judge. Not amused, Burrell instructed that Williams be taken into custody for checks to be made on that matter.

In the matter that brought the women before court on Monday, they are both charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to an incident in Tel Aviv, a community in Kingston Central on June 22. The court heard that the complainant went to get her hair done when she was attacked by Dick and Williams. Dick admitted to beating the complainant all over her body with a piece of board. Williams is alleged to have used a broom to hit the complainant on her hand.

"I don't know her [the complainant] Your Honour. A the two a dem [Dick and the complainant] a friend," said Williams. Dick informed the court that the altercation stemmed from a social media post.

"She post something and say 'Every time she post her good vagina friend dem, me take it up pon my head' and she say she ago war me. Your Honour please, me lef me stall put a road," Dick begged, with tears streaming down her face.

"This is just a symptom of idleness, this is a symptom of what is wrong with our society. Why would you want to leave your house about this? This really started over social media war? It should be illegal for people like you to have social media accounts," the senior jurist responded.

Dick and Williams were made the subject of a fingerprint order and are expected to return to court on September 3, when the matter is set for mention. Dick is expected to be sentenced on October 23. A social enquiry report was requested for her.

"You should've done your best not to meet me. They didn't tell you about me? You see when you ago sort out a girl, you affi think about the consequences," Burrell instructed.
