A Kingston resident who defrauded a senior citizen of US$2,100 repaid the money and was freed in the St Catherine Parish Court today.

Michael Campbell, a 34-year-old electrician, of Beatrice Crescent, was charged for obtaining money by means of false pretence. A relative paid the complainant $314,000 in court on Campbell's behalf.

There was an apology to court for the accused action.

Senior Parish Court Judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller then dismissed the matter against Campbell.

Facts are that on June 4, Campbell convinced the 71-year-old complainant that he knew someone who could convert her money. The complainant gave the cash to him with the understanding that he would return with the equivalent in Jamaican dollars, but he didn't. Campbell told the complainant that he placed the money in his account and would pay her soon.

When no money was received after 10 weeks, the complainant reported the matter to the Spanish Town police.

Following an investigation, Campbell was arrested and charged.
