No pay, no problem - Douglas keeps community roads beautiful
In the quiet rural community of Williamsfield, St Catherine, 46-year-old Anthony Davis, known locally as Douglas, has become a beloved figure for his dedication to keeping the roadsides clean.
Despite the challenging work, Davis takes pride in his daily efforts to clear away the brush and maintain a tidy environment for himself and his neighbours.
"Yes, Sir, mi feel good to clean up di place, as it look much better," he said with a smile, visibly proud of his contribution to the community.
On a recent visit to Williamsfield, a community located about three miles from Riversdale in the north eastern section of the parish, THE STAR observed Davis methodically removing bushes he had chopped down, loading them on to a small wooden handcart. Even though Davis isn't always paid for his work, he faithfully returns every day to clear the roadsides and cut grass.
For Williamsfield resident Amos Maxwell, Davis's efforts are a blessing.
"Him a work very hard," Maxwell shared. "Sometimes him clean the road and chop grass for other people, and dem pay him."
Maxwell's words echo the gratitude of many community members who see Davis as a selfless figure, someone who contributes tirelessly to keep Williamsfield neat and welcoming.
It's clear that Davis's love for his community is what drives him. He doesn't clean the roads for praise or monetary gain but simply because he wants his surroundings to look their best. Those who know him well say it has become his daily practice, and his steady dedication to keeping the community clean has not gone unnoticed. His contributions make a big difference, especially in an area where resources for regular maintenance are scarce.
One resident commented that it's simply in Davis's nature to be helpful, adding that his efforts have inspired others in Williamsfield to keep their surroundings tidy.
