Rushell Barrett launches mobile hair business
After being restricted from using the services of her regular stylist, and cutting her own hair out of frustration, 33-year-old Rushell Barrett found inspiration through inconvenience and turned it into a business idea.
Last month, she launched Opulent Undo, a mobile hair take-down service - a concept she believes is a gift from God.
"I did my hair in faux locs, and when it was time to take it down, the stylist declined to do it because it wasn't her work. I had to do it myself, and ended up cutting my hair. I was so upset," Barrett recounted. "I kept asking God, like, 'what can I do to earn additional income?' Then the Lord dropped this idea on me--to do take-downs for others and go to them to provide the service. Everything just started coming into place from there."
Barrett's service is not only about removing braids, faux locs, or sewn-in extensions. She offers an all-inclusive package that includes washing, blow-drying, and scalp treatments, all in the comfort of her clients' homes.
"When I show up, I have everything--shampoo, conditioner, blow dryer, trash bags for cleanup. The client doesn't need to worry about a thing," she explained. Operating primarily in Montego Bay, St James, Barrett currently navigates her appointments using taxis, but is determined to expand her reach.
"I plan to partner with others to offer the service in different areas. For now, I'm working solo, but I'm definitely looking to grow," she said.
Although her venture is still in its early stages, Barrett has seen steady growth in her clientele.
"In the first month, I had about 10 to 12 clients. It's gaining traction on TikTok because my first video got over 30,000 views," she shared. "The feedback has been amazing. People are saying it's innovative, professional, and convenient."
Barrett's pricing ranges between $5,500 and $8,000, depending on the style and service. She acknowledged that some people prefer to manage their own take-downs, but expressed confidence in the efficiency and convenience her service offers.
"Many clients are busy professionals or parents who simply don't have the time. A take-down that might take two days for someone to do themselves, I can complete in three to four hours," she said. "Plus, I save their hair. Cutting your own hair during a take-down defeats the purpose of a protective style."
But Barrett's journey hasn't been without challenges. Walking away from her stable administrative assistant job in the medical field took courage.
"It was a good-paying job, but I felt unfulfilled. I prayed about it, and when the Lord told me to step out; I obeyed," she revealed.
With the unwavering support of family and friends, Barrett is optimistic about the future.
"Everyone has been super proud and encouraging. They share my content and cheer me on. It's been overwhelming and uplifting," she said. Barrett advised aspiring entrepreneurs that if they have a business idea, they should "just do it".
"Write down your plan, pray over it, and trust God to carry you through. There will be tough days, but with faith and hard work, everything will fall into place."
