Gordon wants to continue building at Humble Lion

Coach of Humble Lion Merron Gordon has expressed his disappointment that despite the team's good form in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) final preliminary stage they missed out on a top-six spot.

Humble Lion entered Wednesday's final preliminary game with a slim chance of bagging a spot, but although they had a massive 4-0 win against Montego Bay United, it was not enough to see them through.

Gordon took over the reins as head coach from Lennie Hyde with the team struggling on 12 points from the same number of games. The Effortville-based club improved to 46 points from 33 games to finish in eighth position.

"I am disappointed, I think I gave it a good shot in terms of where we are coming from. We were in a relegation fight so the first objective was to clear that hurdle," Gordon told STAR Sports yesterday.

"I went into a new structure and it took a while to get what I wanted from the team. In the latter part, the team did well. I am a trophy driven type of person, so I am disappointed that we did not go on to the championship stage of the competition to try and win the title," he added.

NEXT SEASON

"I have seen growth in the team and I have spoken to the board. I hope they will allow me to continue next season. I think I will be back based on what the president (Mike Henry) and other board members have said to me," Gordon shared.

Gordon, who is also in charge of Lennon High School's football programme, indicated that there could be changes at Humble Lion next season.

"We are looking at younger players. We will do scouting in the parish to identify talent that could fit the system I think between 19 to 21-year-old for now as the schoolboys would not be available until next January," he pointed out. "We want a new brand, as I think we depended too much on players at the height of their career. We want players who are hungry, wanting to play professionally abroad, and to represent the country," he concluded.
