Campbell and Salmon suspensions a big blow – Miller

Jamaica Scorpions captain John Campbell and off-spinner Pete Salmon have been suspended from bowling in domestic West Indies matches with immediate effect.

Cricket West Indies has confirmed that opinion reports by independent assessors at Loughborough University have found the bowling actions of the pair to be illegal following reports from the Scorpions' encounters against the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force and Guyana Jaguars in their Professional Cricket League Regional Four-Day Championship matches.

The pair are to undergo remedial work supervised by the Scorpions franchise and can apply for a reassessment after modifying their bowling actions in accordance with the regulations.

The news has come as a blow to the Scorpions, who will face off with the Jaguars in round six at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium starting on Thursday.

The last time Salmon faced the Jaguars, he had career-best figures of 8 for 110 in a winning cause and assistant coach Nikita Miller says the 27-year-old has been doing well for the team and will be missed.

"Pete played a key role in our bowling unit as he was our bunker bowler who held up one end to allow our captain to rotate the other bowlers," Miller said.

"He has bowled well in the two games he has played so far, especially against Guyana; he was a fear factor for the Guyanese batters and that effect will be missed."

Miller said that Campbell's suspension will not have that same negative effect on the team as the skipper did not bowl in the last two matches the Scorpions played.

Salmon's absence is set to open up the door for the return of two spinners who have been absent due to injury. STAR Sports understands that off-spinner Akim Fraser and left-arm spinner Dennis Bulli could be recalled to the squad.

Fraser and Bulli had been on the injured list. However, both players turned out for their respective teams in the Senior Cup competition at the weekend.

Fraser has not seen any first-class action this season. However, he was one of the standout bowlers when the Scorpions faced the Jaguars at home last season. Bulli, who played in the opening encounter against the Red Force before aggravating a shoulder injury, is said to be fit and ready to go once more.

Off-spinner Jamir Merchant, who missed the last game against the Leeward Island Hurricanes, is also into the reckoning for a spot in the final 11.
