National striker Junior Flemmings' United Soccer League's season has ended following his six-game suspension for "foul and abusive language in the form of a homophobic slur". The suspension was handed down by the league yesterday.

The punishment comes after the completion of the investigation into the incident on September 30 in which Flemmings, who plays for Phoenix Rising was accused to have spoken a homophobic slur at San Diego Loyal player Collin Martin, who is openly gay. The match was forfeited by Loyal players, who were leading 3-1 at half-time, in protest.

Additionally, Flemmings has been fined an undisclosed amount. This means that Flemmings will miss the entirety of the USL championship play-offs, which are scheduled to take place this weekend.

Rising General Manager Bobby Dulle, in the club statement, has apologised for the events that took place.

"Phoenix Rising accepts and supports the results of this investigation. These actions could not be more contrary to the core values of our organisation and we apologise to all who were affected," he said.

Additionally, the club said that Flemmings would be provided with the "resources he needs to learn and grow from this so that he can become a model of change in the sport".

The start of his suspension coincide with last Saturday's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy II. He is currently the league's top goalscorer with 14 goals.
