When Gillian Lee experiences the excitement of race day at the Miami Grand Prix this weekend, it fulfils a promise to her daughter while she continues to fall in love with the sport.

Lee left the island yesterday as the winner of Heineken's 0.0 promotion, which granted her a chance to witness the sport that has had her hooked since last year and will join her daughter for both to share in the experience, which has proven a fitting graduation present.

"I had told my daughter that I entered. She is graduating on the eighth of May, and we had already planned to be overseas. So I say, 'you know this competition is going on. It is the day before your graduation, and I am going to enter. So you know if I win, I am not going to the graduation'.

"So we laughed it out not expecting to win. She said, 'if you win, you know you have to take me'," Lee told STAR Sports.

"She doesn't know much about F1, so she really wanted to go. I promised her, but I know someone who is really into F1 and would really want to go. It was tricky, but I promised her, she graduated, and she did well, so I am proud of her."

Lee got into the sport last year, thanks to the popular Netflix series Drive to Survive, which has been responsible for the growth in F1's popularity in the United States.

"I binge-watched it, so I got to know a lot about Formula One in a short space of time. I was so caught up and couldn't wait for this season to start, and I can't believe that I get to actually be at one of the races," Lee said.

A supporter of team Ferrari, Lee said the sport is growing in Jamaica, which she credits to the series and hopes it continues to grow.

"I think it is growing because of the exposure with the series, and I personally try to get my friends to watch with me so I can get to talk to them about it, and I think it will catch on more," Lee said.
