Hyatt gives back to Jamaica through coaching

Cricketing pundits would remember Danza Hyatt with the former Jamaica and West Indies player gracing the regional and international scene between 2004 and 2014.

The 40-year-old Hyatt, who played nine One-Day Internationals and five Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) for the West Indies, has been plying his trade, mainly in Australia over the years, with the St Catherine CC player now coaching on his home soil.

Hyatt is the current coach of his local club's under-15 team, playing in the ongoing Kingston Wharves Under-15 Championships.

For the former Jamaica Tallawahs batsman, coaching the youngsters is a natural fit after spending recent years being the assistant coach at his club in Australia.

"Getting into coaching has been good for me. I have been doing a lot of work in Australia and Darley Cricket Club, so to come back home and help my club is an honour for me," Hyatt said.

He holds a Level One coaching certificate from Australia while getting his Level Two certification as he gains more experience as a coach, with aspirations to one day lead one of the national teams.

The right-hander is clear that he will take things one step at a time, ensuring he gains the knowledge to help him blossom as a coach.

"Starting with the youngsters is a good place for me, as I believe the grassroots level is the most important part of development and learning," he said.

In the meantime, Hyatt's team will be looking to secure victory over Kingston and St Andrew Cricket Association on Monday to book a place along with Melbourne in the quarter-finals of the Kingston Wharves Under-15 tournament.

St Catherine registered their first loss in the competition on Tuesday to Melbourne.

St Catherine scored 105 in 38.5 overs, with Jaheim Frater top scoring with 20, against six wickets for Zackedy Taylor. Melbourne replied with 107 for six, with Adjani McLean scoring an unbeaten 44.
