Jamaica Scorpion batters failed to cope with the left-arm spin of Daniel Doram, who bagged a career-best seven wickets, to lead the Leeward Islands Hurricanes to a comprehensive eight-wicket win in their Super50 Cup encounter at Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago yesterday.

Doram sent down 9.5 overs and snared the last seven scalps while conceding 29 runs, to rip apart the experienced Jamaica line-up for just 123 runs in 32.5 overs.

Captain Alzarri Joseph bagged two wickets for 24 runs to set things up for the Hurricanes, who won the toss and inserted the Scorpions.

"It's a good way to start, but I think we have to build on this performance and go on in the rest of the games," said Joseph.

Only Odean Smith, with 26, and Nkrumah Bonner, who made 24, got starts as Doram claimed the third best figures in the regional list 'A' competition to help set up the comprehensive win.

The win was confirmed when opener Kieron Powell hit a swashbuckling 80 not out to guide the Hurricanes to 124 for two in just 14 overs.

Powell smashed six fours and six sixes in his 36-ball knock, while right-hander Karima Gore hit an unbeaten 19 from 21 balls with two fours.

Nicholson Gordon and Fabian Allen picked up the wickets to fall for the Scorpions.

Doram was pleased that his bowling performance helped Hurricanes to beat the defending champions.

"I am really pleased with my outing today; the wicket was spinning a bit, and I just let the ball do the work," Doram said.

Losing captain Rovman Powell lamented a poor start by the Scorpions in the regional competition.

"We have to find a way to not get off to a poor start in this competition. We are an experienced bunch, and we will bounce back in the coming games," Powell said.

The Jamaica Scorpions will next face the Barbados Pride at the UWI Spec tomorrow.
