Defending champions Jamaica Scorpions have lost their fifth straight game, with the previously winless Windward Islands Volcanoes inflicting a four-wicket loss in their Super50 Cup match at Brian Lara Cricket Academy yesterday.

Scorpions' talented and experienced batting failed to spark once again, as they only managed 158 runs in 42.2 overs, with Nkrumah Bonner top-scoring with 72 from 110 balls with five fours.

Only three other batters got into double figures, with captain Rovman Powell getting 13 and Shalome Parnell and Brad Barnes each getting 10.

Player-of-the-Match Shermon Lewis, who opened the bowling, bagged three wickets for 18 runs from four overs while he was well supported by Darel Cyrus, who also bagged three wickets.

The Windwards run chase was built mainly around a knock of 40 from 75 balls from Jeremy Solozano and Alick Athanaze, who opened the innings and scored 36 from 28 balls.

All-rounder Shamar Springer chipped in with a valuable unbeaten 24 from 45 balls to guide the stuttering Volcanoes home at 159 for six in 36.2 overs.

There was a wicket each for Jeavor Royal, Parnell, Barnes and Odean Smith.

Scorpions' captain Powell blamed their lack of consistency in all three departments for their poor showing in this year's tournament.

"If you look at our batters, none have accumulated 200 runs, and we've already gone five games. None of our bowlers, especially our spinners, are closing in on 10 wickets. When you look at it, if you are struggling in those departments, you will get results like what we are getting," Powell said.

He added that they will look to regroup, and everything needs to change in the remaining matches.

"We as batters have to do better, and as senior players, we have to carry our weight a bit more, and as bowlers, we still have to find ways of getting wickets," Powell continued.

The Scorpions will next face the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force on Thursday.
