Jamaica is far from the Archipelago in the Central Mediterranean island of Malta, but that is the distance that midfielder Martin Davis has travelled to ply his trade in the Jamaican Premier League (JPL).

The former St George's College player is already creating a buzz for his new club, Portmore United, after 45 appearances and scoring 12 goals from 2019 for Gzira in the Maltese Premier League.

The 27-year-old was on the scoresheet in last Sunday's 2-0 win for Portmore over neighbours Dunbeholden FC, and the energetic midfielder is swiftly getting used to his new environment with the former JPL champions.

"It will take a bit of getting used to the league. So far, I am pleased with my outing. The league is a bit tougher, and the surfaces are different. The conditions are hotter, but nothing I am not used to," he said.

Davis and fellow attacker Alex Marshall are the two linchpins in coach Phillip Williams' attack, and the duo have been paired to take Portmore's attacking style to the next level.

That task is one that Davis is keen on relishing.

"Winning championships is about winning overall, and I intend to improve my game by being sharper and even fitter so that I can perform to my optimum for the team," added Davis.

The former national U-17 and U-20 player believes returning to Jamaica and playing in the JPL for Portmore was the right move at the right time, as they seek to cop another title after winning back-to-back in 2018 and 2019.

"Portmore feel like a family because when you look at it, we won our last game 2-0, and everybody was not satisfied. That is the type of attitude that we want to take through the entire season as we look to win the title this season," he said.

Coach Williams was pleased to have an athlete of the calibre of Davis in his current young squad.

"It is good to have a player coming in and finding their feet immediately. He adds a lot to our attack, and I hope he continues to produce for us as the season progresses," Williams said.

Portmore United are fourth in the JPL with six points from three games. They will go for their third win on the trot when they take on Molynes United on Sunday.
