Assistant coach Nikita Miller is upbeat about Jamaica Scorpions' bowling prospects for the upcoming West Indies Championships, as he believes they looked the part in the recently concluded first trial game at Sabina Park.

According to Miller, it is the first in some time the bowlers have impressed with either of the trial match teams getting to 300 runs in the three-day encounter, which was dominated by the ball, with Jermaine Blackwood's Team A posting 206 and 153 and Jeavor Royal's Team B managing 266 and 199 for five.

Miller, who works mainly with the bowlers, said the first outing was encouraging as the coaching staff looks to whittle down the players who will represent Jamaica in February.

"After the first trial game, I am pleased with the bowling. All the bowlers at some point throughout the game had good spells, which is good going forward."

Miller highlighted the batters for scoring some runs. He singled out players believed to have carried the coaches' instructions of the coaches properly.

"I must credit young batsman Carlos Brown, who batted with maturity at the top of the innings. We told them that we wanted the openers to bat until lunch, and he did that and got some runs as well, which is good."

Miller also highlighted the fierce battle for the wicket-keeping position, with Romain Morris and young Daniel Beckford showing true competitive spirit.

"I thought Romaine batted well to get 80-plus, and even young Beckford scored an unbeaten 20-plus and showed application at the crease, so it shows some competitiveness for the wicket-keeping position," added Miller.

The players are expected to return to training next week, from the break for the Christmas holiday.
