Stephen McClaren, the newly-appointed head coach of the Reggae Boyz speaking at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) press conference at the JFF’s office in New Kingston yesterday.

Stephen McClaren, the newly-appointed head coach of the Reggae Boyz, says he will focus on selecting the best players to represent the country, irrespective of where they are domiciled.

"To be a good team you need the best players. The better the players then the better the chances," he said. "If that means we can use heritage players from the UK (United Kingdom) or from America (United States) then we will do that. Local players, they have got to be good enough. Heritage players, they have got to be good enough."

In his first press conference as head coach, McClaren said Jamaica's relative lack of resources compared to international powerhouses should not be seen as an impassable barrier. He said a good culture and team belief, backed up by the best quality, is important for every successful team on the international stage.

"I think it is not just my philosophy but a philosophy over the years that have brought success to many managers," he said. "It is the bedrock of any team. If you're going to be successful, then that is what you need. It is not all about resources or money, that does help, but you do need to get the best people and to have the best culture."

McClaren noted the Jamaican culture as a key reason behind his decision to leave the Manchester United coaching staff to take up the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) coaching offer.

He said the challenge and excitement of the Jamaican project was also quite influential.

"I left a very good job and very good team to come on to this project and I believe in it and that is why I am here. I believe in the people because I've known the people before and after our conversations, the vision and the dream was all there. I am excited about this project but it is going to be hard work."

McClaren first assignment as Reggae Boyz boss will be in the CONCACAF Nations League. Jamaica face a home appointment with Cuba on September 6, before an away fixture against Honduras on September 10.
