Nicholson shares ‘blessings’ with Boys’ Town community
Having grown up in the community of Boys' Town, Reggae Boyz striker Shamar 'Boza' Nicholson said he believes it is his responsibility to give back to the community through his initiative, 'Boza's League Competition and Kids' Treat'.
Held at his former stomping grounds at Collie Smith Drive Sports Complex last Friday and Saturday, Nicholson said the second successful staging of the event was important for him and his family.
"I just want to give God thanks for the blessings so I can share my blessings to the community," Nicholson said while in attendance at the event.
"This is something big for me and my family and my friends because I was once a kid like these kids so I know how much it means for these kids to put on things like this. For me, it is a big thing and it is just the start of something great."
Nicholson had risen through the ranks at Boys' Town FC before he had made the switch to Europe, transferring to Slovenian outfit NK Domzale in 2017.
The striker remembers his time playing for the club and hopes he can inspire others from the community to aim for success as well.
"For me personally, it is all about putting a smile on a kid's face. Coming from the garrison, this is to show that is possible that they can do it also. It gives them the belief and to inspire them so when they grow up, they can also do the same thing," Nicholson shared.
He believes as a national representative, he should lead as an example for others to follow both on and off the pitch, as he hopes to continue giving back to his community because he believes in the future of the youths of Boys' Town.
"I am not the first and I won't be the last. As I've said, as an ambassador for the country, I am talking for the others that this is a big thing for the community and for the youths, our future."
The Boza's League Competition and Kids' Treat is a two-day event which includes a six-a-side football competition, as well as a netball competition.
On the final day, Nicholson also hosted a kids' treat for the families in the community.
