‘Tappa’ critical of ‘poor’ Mount Pleasant despite win
League leaders Mount Pleasant Football Academy have drawn criticism from head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore after what he deemed a poor performance after they clipped nine-man Chapelton Maroons 1-0 yesterday at Drax Hall Sports Complex.
Mount Pleasant extended their win streak in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) to four games.
"It's hard to find words to explain but I think we were poor today. Not to take anything away, and we could probably find a lot of excuses, but I think we were poor today," he said in his post-match interview.
"But, we met our objective in terms of winning the game and actually kept a clean sheet so it's as simple as that."
The win sees Mount Pleasant moving to 61 points atop the table and will maintain their lead with a single match remaining in the second round of JPL fixtures.
For Chapelton, they remain 12th in the standings on 22 points, trailing Molynes United by a single point. They are just outside the relegation zone by three points.
The Clarendon-based team had their share of misfortunes in the contest as they were reduced to nine men by the full time whistle as Gawain Austin picked up a red card in the 30th minute of play, before Andrew Vanzie followed suit in time added.
Despite the numerical advantage, Whitmore said he expected a lot more from Mount Pleasant, who were without captain Sue-Lae McCalla. Mount Pleasant also started with several of their key players on the bench.
"It is always hard to play against a 10-man team. I think Chapelton Maroons, they didn't offer a lot but I think what we did was unbelievable," he stated.
"We just don't want to find any excuses with who's playing. The fact still remains that it was still Mount Pleasant who were out there this afternoon and there are registered players. It was for them to go out there and show, but we just didn't turn up."
Mount Pleasant's next assignment will see them travelling to Montego Bay United, while Chapelton Maroons will host Cavalier.
In other notable results yesterday, Vere Phoenix were clipped 2-1 by Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, while defending champions Cavalier were defeated 1-0 by Harbour View.
