D-day for U20 Reggae Girlz
Jamaica's Under-20 Reggae Girlz will look to clinch a spot in the Concacaf Women's U20 Championship when they meet hosts Nicaragua in a Group D decider at 7 p.m. today at the Estadio Nacional de Futbol in Managua.
The young Reggae Girlz must win to advance while Nicaragua can move to the next round with a draw. Both have six points but with 13 goals for and none against Nicaragua have a superior goal difference. The Reggae Girlz have also not conceded in the tournament, but they have scored two goals fewer than the Nicaraguans.
The Reggae Girlz made history while getting a second straight win against St Kitts and Nevis on Saturday as the goals from Maya Raghunandanan, Una Lue, and Destiny Powell helped Jamaica become the first Caribbean team to score 300 goals in the history of the tournament. Jamaica rank second all-time behind the United States.
The penultimate match day of the qualifiers will determine three spots in the final round. Puerto Rico and and Costa Rica seek to maintain their lead atop their respective groups to advance and continue their qualification hopes for the FIFA Women's U20 World Cup.
Puerto Rico sit at the top of the table. Las Boricuas have proved to be a rising power with players like Gemma Gillespie and Ashley McMahon.
El Salvador are currently second in Group B on goal difference.
Costa Rica meet Guatemala in Group F at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago. This will be the eighth time these Central American teams share the pitch, with Costa Rica leading the series with a 5-1-1 record in seven matches.
