Inspired Waterhouse defeat Portmore
After four matches without a win at the Drewsland Mini Stadium, Waterhouse defeated Portmore United, which ended the game with 10 players, 1-0 at home in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) yesterday.
The club also dedicated the win to former coach, Geoffrey Maxwell, who passed on the weekend.
Andre Fletcher scored the game's only goal in the first half, as Waterhouse stayed three points ahead of Racing United in sixth.
Waterhouse's assistant coach, Damion Gordon, said they were organised and strong defensively, which ensured them the result.
"It was hard enough (not winning at home). We definitely weren't seeing much fight. We saw a bit of it tonight and we were very impressed with it. And the crowd helped us, so we now have to move forward," he said.
"It was a good game based on how we set up. I like how we organised and we were really good on the set plays. We defended well and really took that chance and won the game," Gordon stated.
He added that Maxwell's passing, for whom a minute's silence was dedicated before the start of the game, was a big boost for them going into the match.
"We always try to get the players to know the history of the club. Tonight was a night to replicate some of the past memories and the team was excellent," he added.
Maxwell was a long-standing coach of the club, guiding the team to the Premier League title.
It was a competitive first half with not much clear cut scoring opportunities. Zhaine Pinnock had the best chance for Portmore but lifted over from eight yards.
Portmore United's Akeem Mullings was ejected at the 77th minute after pulling down Fletcher, who was through on goal.
Their coach, Rodolph Austin, admitted that they paid dearly for one bad mistake.
"It was a tough game. We were in control of the game, leading up to that bad mistake that led to the free kick they scored from," he observed.
"From that they gained some momentum and gave it their all. We tried to get back one but it did not happen. So credit to Waterhouse. You could see it meant a lot to them," he stated.
