Watkin: I hope to get a call for next Boyz squad
Dunbeholden's defender Chevoy Watkin, the rock in his team's backline this season, has expressed his disappointment at not being named to the Reggae Boyz squad that faced Trinidad and Tobago in a recent two-match friendly.
"I was expecting to get a call but my team wasn't really doing well. So I was expecting that (being overlooked) too. But I hope to get a call (for the next squad). I will keep on pushing. I will not stop until I get my chance as I think I deserve it," he told STAR Sports.
The no-nonsense defender, however, pointed out that his team's performance before the start of the year was not good enough and that may have resulted in him being overlooked for players in better performing clubs. He is now hoping that his team's improved performance will help him to get his chance.
In recent weeks, Dunbeholden have lifted themselves from relegation strugglers and are now challenging for a play-off spot.
They are currently ninth in the Jamaica Premier League standing with 32 points, five points off Waterhouse in sixth place.
Although coach Harold Thomas maintains that they are not focusing on the top six, and they are just taking it game by game, Watkin declared that the players see things differently.
"We have gone four (wins) now and we just hope we can come together as a team and make it to the top six.
"We are the players. It is our aim to make the top six. After most games players would text in the group and one thing on their minds is the top six. That is our aim," he insisted.
"We won last week and we won this week. It is a good look. It keeps us motivated and keeps our heads high. So we really hope to make it to the top six."
Dunbeholden have been the form team over the last few weeks, with five wins in six matches. In those six games, they have recorded four clean sheets and the Watkin's tenacity and energy have been key to their defensive display.
He also pointed to the addition of 33-year-old Damion Binns from Waterhouse as another reason for their improved performance in this area.
"It (defence) is good. It is like a rock now with Binns. I saw him on TV playing as a youth and now I am here playing with him. I look up to him with his experience to guide us through."
Although nursing an niggling ankle, Watkin believes he is still playing at a very high level.
"Out of 10 I grade myself eight. But I have an anke injury, so I don't force it. We are coming for a (top six) spot but we are going to take every game as a step and hope we get three points when we go on the field," added the 29-year-old who moved from Portmore United to Dunbeholden in 2022.
