Track and bobsled, Tracey not afraid to do both
Having made his winter sports debut for Jamaica at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation World Championships over the weekend, sprinter Tyquendo Tracey is open to competing in both bobsled and track and field.
Tracey competed alongside teammates Shane Pitter and Tyreek Bucknor as they finished 21st in the two-man bobsleigh event with a combined time of two minutes, 48.71 seconds (2:48.71) across their three heats.
Germany swept the podium as Francesco Friedrich and Alexander Schuller took gold in 3:39.32 across four heats, Johannes Lochner and Georg Fleischhauer silver in 3:39.35, and Adam Ammour and Benedikt Hertel bronze in 3:40.15.
Tracey, who was initially approached to compete in bobsled by Jamaica Bobsleigh and Skeletal Federation president Chris Stokes, said he found the training for the sport very similar to his sprint training.
"To be honest, it wasn't difficult to translate the training over to bobsled. I was able to visualise everything in my head and that was why it kind of came to me a bit easier," he said.
"Speaking to individuals that have been around bobsled, they said sprinters that have tried bobsled normally quit because they can't translate the running form into pushing a sled down the ice. I mean, different people can fall short in different ways but for me, it wasn't that difficult."
Tracey explained, however, that despite the experience, he is not stepping away from track and field as he envisions a future of competing in both sports.
He said where his training and scheduling allows it, he is open to further his training with the bobsled team.
""I mean, it is possible. The training that I'm doing, it can translate into bobsled," he said.
"For now, it is definitely something that I can do alongside track and field. I am coming back home to get back into track training to get back in line for my season."
For now, Tracey is focused on track and field as he believes he is in the best form of his career.
With a new personal best in the 60 metre event, Tracey has set his eyes on securing a spot in the World Athletics Championships set for September this year.
