Getting married may have messed up my green card

May 18, 2020

Dear Pastor,

I am having a problem and I would like your advice. I am married, but my mother is filing for me. I was told that I should not get married until after I received my green card, but it was taking so long.

I wanted to live a holy life and I had my boyfriend. I was in the church and I did not want to fornicate all the time.

My boyfriend and I love to have sex, so we used to chance it and sleep together. But then he would get up and go away so that the people on my road wouldn't see him and let everybody know that I was sleeping with a man.

You see, I used to teach Sunday school. So, we went ahead and got married. I did not even tell my mother that I got married.

My friends are telling me that what I did will affect my filing because my mother applied for me in my maiden name. I am very worried that I might not get to go to the US because of this marriage. So, I am asking you for your advice.

W.F

Dear W.F,

I suggest that you speak to a lawyer who deals with immigration matters. I am not a lawyer, so I am not competent in this area. I understand why you got married.

The temptations were real. As you said, you and your man love sex and both of you couldn't wait until you were granted the green card, so both of you got married.

It is unfortunate that you did not tell your mother what you were about to do, but I repeat, speak to an immigration lawyer. I hope everything go well for you.
